Liquidity’s founder Ian MacDonald’s passions for both wine and art have come together at this Okanagan Falls winery. The tasting rooms and the public areas display art in exhibitions that change continually throughout the seasons, featuring international as well as Canadian artists. At the tasting bar, the wines are as sophisticated as the art. The most accomplished wines include Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays; the latter are frequent winners at the Chardonnay du Monde competition in France.

Liquidity was established when Ian, a Vancouver businessman and art collector, teamed up with wine-loving Albertans in 2008 to buy an ailing Okanagan Falls vineyard left over from a failed winery project. Initial vintages were made off site while they revived the vineyard. By 2013, a tasting room and bistro opened. A few years later, when Liquidity opened a separate premium tasting lounge for seated and tutored tastings, the walls displayed art from Ian’s superb personal collection.

The vineyard had 4 hectares (10 acres) of mature vines, notably Pinot Noir; another four on the prime south-facing slope was planted with Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2014 Liquidity added a contiguous 4 hectares (10 acres) of vines by taking over the neighbouring Lusitano Estate Winery, sold by the owners after just a year in business. These three blocks of vineyard mean that most of Liquidity’s production, about 7,000 cases in 2018, is estate grown.

Liquidity’s early vintages were made first by consulting winemakers and then by Matt Holmes, a young Australian. When he returned to his homeland, Liquidity recruited Ontario-born Alison Moyes. Working as a sommelier in Halifax fired an interest in winemaking. After training at Brock University, she came to the Okanagan in 2008 to work at Osoyoos Larose, Stoneboat Vineyards, and, since 2015, Liquidity. Under her hand, the Liquidity portfolio has continually expanded to include the premium wines now offered to its exclusive wine clubs.

Her favourite grape? “Pinot Noir is my baby,” she says. “Pinot Noir is where my heart is.”
